The Best Beaches in South Maui
(And Why Each One Feels Different)
There’s something special about South Maui’s shoreline.
The beaches here don’t just look different — they feel different. Some are powerful and expansive. Some are calm and restorative. Some are perfect for long morning walks. Others are made for sunset conversations with friends.
If you’re spending time in South Maui — or considering living here — these are a few beaches that truly shape the lifestyle.
🌊 Big Beach (Makena)
Big Beach is dramatic in the best way.
Wide open sand. Expansive views. A feeling of space that’s hard to describe until you’re standing there.
It’s also known for its shore break — and is a favorite for body surfing, skim boarding, and body boarding. When the waves are up, you’ll see locals and visitors lining the shore, waiting for the perfect set. It’s powerful and fun, but it’s a beach to approach with awareness and respect.
On a calm day, it’s breathtaking. On a bigger swell, it’s exhilarating.
The Makena area nearby offers everything from ocean-view homes to some of the most private estates on the island — all surrounded by this raw natural beauty.
🐠 South Maluaka Beach
South Maluaka has an almost indescribable feeling to it.
It’s peaceful. Gentle. Clear. The kind of place where the water often feels calm and the snorkeling is beautiful — especially in the mornings when sea turtles glide through the reef.
There’s a softness to this beach that’s hard to explain but easy to feel.
Fun fact — my husband and I were married here in 2022. It’s a place that holds personal meaning for me, and every time I step onto that sand, it feels grounding and special.
This stretch of Makena has a quiet elegance to it — understated, beautiful, and serene.
🌅 Keawakapu Beach (Mana Kai – Kihei)
This one is part of my daily rhythm.
Keawakapu Beach, just outside Mana Kai in Kihei, is my favorite place to meet friends for sunset. The sky turns soft gold, the ocean settles, and the energy feels calm and connected.
It’s also where I take my morning walks — starting near Mana Kai in Kihei and heading toward the Kea Lani in Wailea. That stretch of sand at sunrise is peaceful, expansive, and quietly energizing. It sets the tone for my entire day.
If you want to understand the rhythm of South Maui living, walk this shoreline early in the morning.
Homes nearby range from beachfront condos in Kihei to refined Wailea residences just up the coast — offering different ways to experience this incredible stretch of shoreline.
Why Beaches Matter When Choosing Where to Live
In South Maui, lifestyle and location are inseparable.

• Sunset gatherings with friends?
The beach you’re closest to often shapes your daily life here.
If you’re considering buying or selling in South Maui, I always encourage clients to think beyond square footage — and toward the lifestyle they want to build.
Because here, the shoreline becomes part of your routine.
